Guide for setting up an indoor grow room tent – Grow Tent selection, grow lights and Ventilation

Choosing the size of the grow tent you should take into account the number and the estimated size of the plants to be grown. 1m-2m size tent is suitable for 8-9 plants, provided that they will grow in full size. If a chosen tent has not less than two ventilation flaps, it would be supplied with ventilation “socks” to be easily installed and would ensure absolute light proofness. While deciding what tent to choose, note that a carbon filter and a light unit will weigh about 15 kg, so the tent should be rated to sustain such weight. However, modern grow tents are capable of safely bearing about 30 kg.

Concerning the light proofness it is possible to say that a tent is absolutely light proof if the ventilation flaps are closed. If they are open some amount of light will be lost. In order to minimize light losses, we use light baffling materials for making our ventilation flaps. It is recommended to pay attention to this aspect while choosing a grow tent, since not all of those available on the market feature the same light preserving abilities, and not always light baffling materials are used in the ventilation flaps. Keeping them closed will help ensure complete light proofness. Fresh air can be blown into the tent with a small 4” ventilation fan through one of the ventilation “socks”.

Proper lighting is of key importance for the plants. Nonetheless, excessive light may result in the increase of temperature inside the tent. It is best to utilize 400w HPS or 600w HPS (High Pressure Sodium) lights for the grow tents 1m-1,2m large. These lights are especially designed to ensure proper plants and flowers growth cycle. Metal Halide (MH) bulbs are also perfect for the growing cycle of the plants; however, newer generations HPS lights offer almost the same benefits.

Grow lights include a reflector, a bulb (lamp), and ballast. The reflector is situated in the tent, and a bulb is screwed into it. Ballast should be outside the tent, and the lead from the reflector should be plugged into it. To avoid melting of the timer and fire as its result, such lights should not be plugged directly into the electrical timer. An electrical contractor should be used to prevent fire. A grower can use Volvit Eazi Rolls to conveniently adjust the light at the necessary height.

Ventilation of the tent is also essential for the plants growing. Changing the air (about 20 times per hour) inside the tent will help to normalize the humidity, temperature and mould growth there. To properly choose the fan size you should multiply the height, length, and breadth of the tent in meters. Thus, a tent sized 2m x 1m x 1m has 2 cubic meters of air. Multiplying this number by 20 (the number of air changes per hour) you will find out that a fan rated at 40m3/hr would be capable to ventilate such grow tent.

Resolved Question: why are my tomatos wilting at the same time every day.?

I am growing tomatoes hydroponcily. They are growing in an east window, and have a grow light on them. They are doing very well, but every day around noon when the sun stops shining on them, they wilt. They recover later in the day. This has scared me several times. Why dose it happen, and can something like this affect them in a more significant way later on?

Resolved Question: why are my tomatos wilting at the same time every day.?

Resolved Question: indoor gardening question?

I like to grow a lot of my plants indoors including tomatoes and things of that nature. it helps me through the winter and it makes my room very green, I’m planning on creating a green wall that is hanging up netting and having a very aggressive climbing flowering plant. I have a 4 foot grow light and a bunch of windows could I potentially grow morning glory? or is there something else I could grow that would do the same thing?
