Growing plants indoors can extend your growing season, especially if you live in a cold-weather climate that makes gardening outside next to impossible in the winter. You will want to get a grow light system in order to provide your plants with enough and appropriate light. If you choose HID, or high intensity discharge lights, you’ve made a great choice because the bulbs most closely imitate natural sunlight and they last a long time. In order to use these types of grow lights, you will need some type of ballasts. A ballast is used to control the flow of currency through the bulb. If you choose digital ballasts for your grow lamps, they will last longer.

There are different types of ballasts available. An electrical ballast is used to limit the current flowing into a circuit. One of its benefits is that it helps the bulb operate at a higher efficiency. Electrical ballasts also come with an instant start, rapid start, and programmed start. Some use more energy than others, and some offer more reliable starts that others depending on which you might select.

Digital ballasts offer several advantages for hydroponic gardening that other types of ballasts do not. One is that they weigh less than other types, an important consideration when you are hanging several lights above your plants. Another is that they run silently and have a greater efficiency than other ballasts, both of which save you aggravation and money. Digital versions of ballasts have start up times that are quicker than other types of ballasts, and they come in compact designs, so you can fit more lighting into a smaller space.

These digital ballasts also allow the lamps to put out more light than with other ballasts. It will save you a lot of money over time to use a digital ballast that allows the grow bulb to put out twenty to thirty percent more light, yet will run on the same amount of electricity.

Digitals ballasts are also safer to use with hydroponic grow lights than other models. Digitals come with circuitry that cuts off in dangerous situations. They also produce less heat, thereby increasing the safety. Digital ballasts can be used with metal halide lamps or with HPS, or high pressure sodium, lights.

Metal halide lamps give off blue light, and this is what you need if you are trying to get your plants to send up new growth. High pressure sodium lights produce light in the red end of the spectrum, which is useful if you are trying to get the plants to flower or produce fruits. No matter what type of light your plants require, there is a digital ballast that will both meet your needs and extend the life of your grow light bulbs.

Which LED Bulbs and LED Grow Lights Are Right For My Indoor Plants?

LED refers to light emitting diodes, and they are the latest type of light bulb to make an impact on all types of lighting today. With regard to using LED lamps and LED grow lights with plants, there are many reasons why they are beneficial. They are small and lightweight, yet produce an amazing amount of light that is specifically usable by plants for photosynthesis. They run cool, eliminating the need for expensive cooling equipment, and they run on much less electricity than traditional HID, HPS grow lights or MH lights. This is why many gardeners are selecting LED grow lights, but knowing a bit about how the lights work will help you in selecting the correct LED bulbs for your indoor garden.

Plants need light from different parts of the light spectrum in terms of color temperature in order to grow well and thrive. Young seedlings need light that will help them to grow into sturdy, mature plants, and that type of light is blue spectrum. Once mature, plants can be induced to produce flowers and fruits by growing them under red and orange spectrum lights.

Knowing this, you can be quite selective in terms of the LED lamps that you choose. Many traditional bulbs offer only one part of the light spectrum, and if it is the wrong part of the spectrum for what your plants require, the plants will not thrive in an indoor setting. This can be alleviated with the use of LED bulbs.

There are red LED bulbs available. They produce a great deal of light, yet run on only one watt of electricity.

Green LED bulbs are useful in certain specific applications. Plants require a certain amount of darkness each day, in addition to light. Plants cannot make use of green light, but if you have work to do with your plants, by putting green LED lamps into ordinary light sockets, you can easily see to do what you need to without adding extra light that would disturb the plants period of needed darkness. Certain LED lamps are used in LED lighting units for a variety of purposes. Tiny one-watt LED bulbs can be selected according to the light spectrum they emit, and thus you can get a lighting unit that only offers light that plants can use.

The LED bulbs are also directional, and can be positioned in order to shine straight down, thus giving your plants the benefit. This is not possible with traditional bulbs, which rely on reflectors to direct the light.

By knowing all of these ideas, indoor gardeners can select the best LED lamps that will suit their plants and their gardening purposes well.

What are they?

Older CFLs have magnetic ballasts which often buzz, new CFLs have replaced this with electric ballasts, which operate silently. Newer energy efficient CFLs really are a fascinating and unique concept.

Mercury: the honest truth:

Yes, CFLs do contain trace amounts of mercury (about 4 milligrams in each bulb.) On the other hand, power plants emit a significant amount of mercury. The reduced energy consumption of CFLs means that there is a net reduction of the amount of mercury emitted for lighting purposes. Also it is worth mentioning that broken CFLs can be cleaned up without involving the fire department.

As compact fluorescent lights grow in usage it is important that vendors stay abreast of all the options and considerations of newer light bulbs when suggesting an effective lighting solution to their clients. i have a light therapy bulb with the numbers 27W FML 5500K on it and i would like to know if it would work well as a grow light?

i have wisteria plants and will be moving soon. so i didnt want to put them in the ground. so i put them in a big pot. it’s winter now i need to buy a grow light. not sure what one to buy.??? any ideas plant lovers. incondescent bulbs or halogen??? not sure. thank you.

that 3rd pic looks like those cfl’s are right inside the pot. lol. make sure they dont grow into the bulbs during that 4 hours dark, and then have the lights come on and your not there to raise them. i think it has enough roots now you …
